Why does someone come to the monastic life?
There are probably as many answers as there are persons, but ultimately it is the desire for God. Beyond all the other yearnings we can experience is this deep longing for the God who made us. As St Augustine said so long ago and so well, You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until we rest in you.
Desire for God in Christian life means following Jesus Christ. It is he who leads us to the Father by way of his gospel.
Desire for God which animates our monastic life is expressed and fostered in very simple yet profound ways – by the succession of prayer, reading, study, work, rest, meals and community sharing of the gift of Christ with and in each other.
